MICHELANGELO UNKNOWN. THE FRESCOES IN THE PAULINE CHAPEL

The two impressive frescos by Michelangelo in the Pauline Chapel measure 6,60 metres by 6,25. An arduous endeavour: Michelangelo started work on the frescoes at the age of 67 and terminated when he was 75.

The artist walked into the chapel commissioned by Pope Paul III Farnese to Antonio da Sangallo the Younger in November 1542.

The year before, in October 1541, he had completed The Last Judgement in the Sistine Chapel.

Now he was back on the scaffolding, with the help of one man only, a young boy who mixed the colour for him.

Painting, and especially working on frescoes, is not an art for old men, he confided to Giorgio Vasari.
