Michelangelo started working on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in 1508 and finished painting the one thousand square metres of the ceiling in 1512. It took him more than four years to complete the most important artwork of Renaissance painting. The video portrays the history of the work’s making: the means and techniques with which the artist completed the project. It is a thorough study: from the scaffolding to the controversial issue concerning his helpers; from the painting techniques to how the plan was actually carried out. The creative process is analysed in all its phases, also looking at the relation between the preparatory drawings and the frescoes. The documentary covers all phases, up to October 31, 1512, the day the vault was finally uncovered.
